Looking for a customizable end-of-line system? Why a global leader in eye care chose MGS
When a global pharmaceutical and medical device company introduced a new syringe for cataract surgery, precise and compliant packaging was one of the most important areas to address.
The product had just received FDA approval and production was ready to begin, so the search began to find the right partner to deliver an automated packaging solution. The system had to support manual feeding as they scaled to full automation over time, while still staying aligned with internal standards and spatial constraints. Among the vendors considered, MGS stood out for its ability to offer both engineering flexibility and a compact footprint.
Ready from day one, with room to expand
The first step was installing a Stealth CT™ cartoner with a manual infeed, already designed to be modified for automation when needed. This gave the customer the freedom to start production quickly, without locking into a fixed setup.
A recurring issue in their previous lines had been laser printing accuracy. When a printer is installed inside a cartoner, mechanical vibration can affect performance, especially when the carton isn’t perfectly aligned during transport. To solve this, MGS integrated its Carton Inspection Module (CIM), which uses top and bottom hold-down conveyors to reduce vibration and maintain squareness throughout. This configuration also makes it possible to adjust line speed independently from carton movement, offering more control during setup and changeovers.
When product stability calls for a new approach
The customer had a clear preference for a top-load case packer, based on less-than-ideal experiences with side-load systems used on past projects. With 85 syringes per case, maintaining the stability of each stack was critical. They had seen how side-loading could disrupt alignment during insertion, especially over long runs.
To make top-loading viable within the available floor space, MGS engineered a custom carton upender conveyor that seamlessly integrated with the MatriX TL top load case packer to meet their packaging preference without expanding the footprint.
Beyond the technology, what made the difference was our ability to fine-tune the system to match specific plant requirements. Where other vendors offered only fixed configurations, we collaborated with the customer to adapt our equipment and tweak down to the details to create not one, but two complete lines for their new product.
An efficient line designed to grow
The final solution brought together all the essential components: vision inspection, serialization, laser coding, and ergonomic handling in a compact, scalable setup. Easy to maintain and designed with future upgrades in mind, the system reflects a broader MGS strength: delivering precise, well-considered automation.
